In the waking morning light, Laura Hopkins stands in the rolling hills of Northern Virginia, her easel and canvas poised for an unfolding landscape before her. With every stroke of her brush, she breathes life into the blank canvas. She captures the essence of the hills, fields, and skies in a symphony of color and texture.
Laura’s artistic journey is a tapestry woven from her childhood memories and explorations in the wilds of southeastern Connecticut. Inspired by the expressive landscapes of the 19th century, she channels the movement and spirit of American Tonalists into her work. Each painting dances with the subtle harmonies and movement of pastoral country-side, moving viewers to empathize with the resounding call of nature.
Back in her studio, Laura’s technique takes center stage. She paints with a fluid passion, allowing the canvas to guide her hand as much as she guides it. She embraces the unexpected and welcomes “happy accidents” as serendipitous gifts, each one altering the course of her painting and culminating in a holistic approach to her work.
Yet, Laura’s process is not confined to the walls of her studio; it begins in the very fields and landscapes she seeks to immortalize. Armed with brushes and her palette, she ventures into the country-side painting en plein air, sketching and photographing the world around her. Each brush stroke is a communion with nature, a dialogue between artist and landscape that transcends mere observation.
Laura’s quest to capture these scenes leaves one with profound appreciation for the largely self-taught artist. She draws on wisdom from contemporary Tonalists like Deborah Paris and Dennis Sheehan, honing her skills with each new landscape and journey her work takes her on.
